• An Auckland landlord is the first to be prosecuted by the government under the new tenancy law after renting a garage to a young family without smoke alarms.

• Investigators say the landlord deliberately & cynically breached the law for not providing the family a warm, dry & safe home.

• The Tenancy Tribunal has ordered him to refund $16,000 in rent & pay $750 in exemplary damages.

• The prosecution is the first under a 2016 law that allows the government, rather than tenants, to prosecute bad landlords.
