The 1 NEWS poll has found that 58% of people surveyed supported a capital gains tax on properties other than the family home, with 34% opposing it, and eight% unsure.
Political editor Corin Dann said Labour would be buoyed by the result, considering leader Jacinda Ardern has said she won’t rule out the possibility of implementing a capital gains tax in the first term of government.
“It [Labour] has been under huge attack over the issue of capital gains over the last three years,” Dann said.
“Andrew Little initially ruled it out. If you remember Jacinda Ardern said she won’t rule out the possibility of a capital gains tax in the first term.
“She might not do it but she’s not going to rule out that possibility.”
The Colmar Brunton poll only asked about support for a capital gains tax on properties.
