Beware of scammers preying on people who are desperate enough to get a rental home.

• A Taupo woman fell victim to a scammer using Facebook to get rental deposits for properties that aren’t available to rent & never owned by them.

• As she was desperate to find a house to finally end her family’s homelessness, the woman grabbed a man’s offer of a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in Tauhara.

• After doing a reference check w/ her friends, the man asked $400 as the first week’s rent & a down payment which she paid to ‘secure’ the property.

• The woman realised something strange after depositing the money, when the man demanded for the remainder of the bond without presenting a tenancy agreement.
